The best time to surf in Salvador is from April to October, this is when Salvador is changing from autumn to winter and then to spring. The winter in Salvador is when we receive the biggest and best ground swells coming from the south quadrant, this does however sometimes bring strong winds from the southeast but with an east facing coast and lots of bays it is always possible to find a good sheltered spot.
Going from November to March, leaving Spring and heading into Summer Salvador still gets hit with great swells from the North Atlantic winter, with little to no wind and hardly a cloud in the sky. The sun is very hot this time of year so have the high factor sun cream packed.
During the summer season in Salvador this is certainly the time to explore, along the south coast of Salvador and the metropolitan area, including Itaparica Island, there are some fantastic reef breaks to be reached by boat.
Going even further south you find the Island of Morro de Sao Paulo, an island that doesn’t allow cars on it. Here you will find great reef breaks and point breaks that pump between July and August.
Heading even further south just slightly you then reach Itacare, where the choice is endless. So many good waves to be found with all types of formations. There is rarely a bad day’s surf in Itacare, it’s more a case of choosing when you want to go depending on the size of wave you want to surf.
